Folk in Tschechien: Eine Einführung in die SzeneRaduza (photo by Richard Procházka)

Walkin' T:-)M berichtet.

Musieke, wei willt musieke maken!

Ich persönlich ziehe es jedoch vor, mit Colum Sands (-> FW#27) die trüben Sinne zu vertreiben: My love she took the winter time and turned it into spring time. Wovon die Rede ist? Vom Folkfrühling in Venne!

KemperFestival de Cornouaille in Kemper, 25.

AljibeAljibe - Collecting the waters of traditional music
Aljibe is a Spanish folk band from the city of Aranjuez, a place in the southern border of the province of Madrid. Pio Fernandez introduces a folk band that has been on the scene of the Castillean folk music since 1985. Their music is mainly based on the traditional tunes of both 'Castillas', but they also play a few other songs from coastal Spanish regions (Atlantic: Galicia & Cantabria, and Mediterranean: Valencia).

Nick Burbridge & McDermott's 2 Hours: Genuine Sense of Disorder
Brighton-based singer/songwriter Nick Burbridge and his musical vehicle named McDermott's 2 Hours slip easily from Celtic folk to folk rock. His songwriting is "a dark bugger but these things seem in need of saying," says Nick. "It's to articulate a genuine sense of disorder that permeates life at the margins." Walkin' T:-)M found out more.

Scottish traditional music for tomorrow
Two traditional music education schemes in the West of Scotland. Scotland's young folk music seems vibrant, and part of this is definitely due to the nurturing of young talent. Scotland's Highlands and Islands region is an area rich of traditions that have survived until today; it is also a region with a large proportion of Gaelic speakers. It seems an obvious place to looking after the future of traditional music. During a Highlands and Islands holiday, Michael Moll came across young musicians from two high profile education facilities for trad music: Plockton High School and Lews Castle College. Reason enough to report more...

Mad for Trad Tutors on CDRom
Tin Sandwich Tips from a Binary Brendan Power? Button Box Brush-Ups from a Digital Derek Hickey? All this and more with Torpey's Trad Tutors on CD-ROM. Irish music tutorials in a box. Not a new idea - we've read the book, heard the tape, seen the video. Loading the CD-ROM was the obvious next step, and no doubt there'll be interactive DVDs in due course. So what's special about MadForTrad's new series of 16 high-tech tutors? Lots, actually, finds Alex Monaghan.

Bríd Ní Mhaoileoin: Irish Adventures in Central Europe
After writing a review of Bríd Ní Mhaoileoin's debut CD 'Ar Mhuin na Muice', Adolf "gorhand" Goriup met her in Flann O'Brien's pub in Graz, Austria, where they had a long conversation about her different projects and a few pints of Guinness. He got so intrigued that he asked her if he could do an interview for FolkWorld and she accepted. So back in Switzerland they started to send mails to and fro and this is the outcome...

We nun Henk - one of the new keepers of Dutch traditional music
Traditional music from the Netherlands Part VIII. In this serie about traditional music in the Netherlands this time not a band from the past but a young and fresh group of musicians. Not many young people in Holland start a band to play the old songs and tunes of the lowlands. We nun Henk (could be translated as 'what a dummy' in the dialect of the city Tilburg) is the big exception and with their latest cd RUM, on which they play songs and tunes once made famous by the Belgian band RUM, they convinced people internationaly that they are one of the new keepers of the Dutch traditional music. I cantori di Carpino29th Bardentreffen in Nuremberg
When bards (and lots of other musicians) meet. The Bardentreffen in the beautiful north Bavarian town of Nuremberg is quite unique, as a free festival with top bands. In 2004 already the 29th edition of the festival took place at the first weekend of August - and again it was well worth a visit. Christian Moll comes back full of musical impressions.

Altan & Cliar Double Bill Concert in Portree
Folk stars in the remoteness. It was for Altan a long held ambition coming true: Touring through small venues in the Highlands and Islands. The tour, where Altan were joined by Scottish band Cliar, was made possible through a number of sponsors. The two bands crossed my way when passing through Portree on honeymoon - no excuse there, this was an opportunity not to be missed!

FolkwoodsFolkwoodstock
Folkwoods Festival Eindhoven 2004. Out in the woods just beyond the walls and gates of Eindhoven there is the Folkwoods festival to find. Last year it was a dust-bowl; this time the area turned into a swamp (quite fittingly for the cajun band on Sunday, we only missed the alligators). The torrents on Friday night easily led into fun activities such as traditional Dutch mud-sliding. Wellingtons recommended. Walkin T:-)m reports.

Sunday night, July 25th 2004, the "Pavillon de Penvilliers" in Quimper hosted some of the finest musicians of the contemporary Folk scene of Brittany, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Gilles le Bigot (guitar) has gathered 4 singers and 9 musicians to perform a single event at the Festival de Cornouaille in Quimper. Adolf "gorhand" Goriup has been there.

Tonder Festival, photot by Michael RoseAs good music as wet weather
Tønder Festival's 30th anniversary in 2004. The Tønder Festival celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, and the music was as good as the weather was wet. And the weather was very wet. While presenting the usual excellent cross-section of Celtic music, this year also featured a number of excellent Canadian bands, Appalachian and Old Time American acts and some very promising new Danish faces. And in keeping with the Danish tradition of throwing a huge birthday party on round brithdays, every 10 years, the organizers had a number of special birthday treats for in store for those who came early to the festival. Michael G. Rose reports.

North Cregg in Hatfield
The University of Hertfordshire booked this powerful young Cork band as part of their Paddy's Day celebrations. The gig was in a plush new concert hall seating well over 400. They didn't fill the place, perhaps because the advertising didn't reach the right audience, but those of us who went had mighty craic altogether. Alex Monaghan reports about a concert of this superb Irish band.Terra Folk

Folk at the Snape Proms 2004
Terrafolk and Danú. Michael Moll went once again to the classic Snape Proms event, which allows people to sit on the ground in a classy concert hall. This year's programme had on the folk/world music side a slight focus on Eastern Europe, apart from the usual Irish and English performers. A live review of two of this year's bands.
