Viljandi Pärimus Muusika Festival 2000 in Estland
ausgepackt, gespielt, gefachsimpelt, Adressen ausgetauscht. Das fing ja gut an ..."

- "Tibet, Tibet" - Interview with Yungchen Lhamo
Colin Jones spoke to the Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo, whose first Real World album "Tibet, Tibet" created a stir amongst the World Music community and unusually for an acapella album stayed in the World Music Chart for some months. At the same time she has gravitated in to becoming a spokesperson for her race and what seems to be the perpetual quest to get the powers that be in the west to pressure China to leave Tibet and stop deliberately destroying what little now remains of its centuries old culture.

- "Mary Black" - Interview with the Irish singer
Dublin's Mary Black talked to Marcus Metz in Mainz (Germany) on the 19th of April 2000 – she had released her new album "Speaking with the Angel" and prepared a small Germany tour in May.

- On the Right Trax: Greentrax Recordings - a Scottish institution
It may be a long way to Tipperary, but it's nearly as far to Cockenzie - when you're starting from Tasmania that is. But how could FolkWorld's Tasmanian contributor visit Scotland and not call in at the offices of that great Scottish folk institution - Greentrax Recordings in Cockenzie, near Edinburgh?

- Malinky - A Scottish song success story
A band focussing on songs, a band with an exciting success story. Malinky are one of the rising stars of the Scottish scene, their success being closely linked to the Danny Award. And now, Malinky's female singer even joins the most important Scottish band. All this is definitely worth a story, so we took the chance to catch Malinky's Karine Polwart to talk not only about music, but also about the Scottish parliament.

- Giant Gaels in Germany
The Continental Celts series, Part IV: Gaelfest 2000. Gaelfest 2000 - as its first edition - took place in early summer, and should have been the biggest Irish Music summer school in Central Europe so far. Having quite a special character, Gaelfest combines workshops, céilís and concerts. Christian Moll finds out more about the organisers of this special event.

- "Underground-folk and traditions" - Emma Härdelin sings in Garmana and Triakel
Welcome to the world of new-folk. This is not just another ancient tune; this is modern music, old dances meeting the computer technology of today. It happened in Sweden, 1993. A group of young people started a new band called: Garmarna. Now, seven years later they are the innovators of the Scandinavian folk music. They are able to create a new sound that has respect for the past and fits into our modern world. This is the story of their lead singer: Emma Härdelin who I interviewed at the folkwoods festival in Eindhoven Holland, last august.

- Scanfolk Part I: Denmark: EURO - nej tak; music - yes please!
The birds of passage take their way from the North to the South of Europe for the winter, FolkWorld takes the other direction, introducing with this issue a new series, taking up what Tom Keller began in the last couple of issues with his Austrofolk-series about Austria (in the German version of FolkWorld). The Scanfolk series starts in Denmark, and will move on in the next year to Sweden, wanting to give some impressions of the national folk music scenes and beyond of that.

- Bagads and Baguettes - Festival Interceltique in Lorient
The beginning of August was hot and sticky on the Royal Alley in downtown Lorient, my base for five hectic days of Irish music immersion. Lorient is a city that has become a hot house of Celtic creativity. For the past thirty years every summer the town has buzzed to the birl of bagpipes and hosted a summer feast of music, arts and crafts with a Celtic theme. Seán Laffey went along as a guest of Cumann Cáirdeas Ceilteach (the organisers of the Irish delegation) to sample the final few days of the millennium FIL.

A bottle of Tønder audience
While all economists looked at Denmark on 28th September to see the Danes voting
against the introduction of the EURO currency, lovers of Celtic music had a different
date and a different reason to look at Denmark in 2000: One of the most important
showcases of Celtic music in Europe happened once again at the last weekend of
August: Tønder Festival, the 26th edition. Once again packed with great music from
all over the place.

- WOMAD 2000 Reading, England
"The first thing you notice as you approach the site, even at eleven o'clock at night as we did, is the number and colour of the banners and flags ruffling in the wind. It is now six years since I've been to WOMAD UK, after coming to every one between 1987 and 1994." Colin Jones went to WOMAD 2000, reporting for FolkWorld about a big bunch of world music acts.
