What's 'banana' in Hindi, 'Twinkle Twinkle' in Japanese and 'hernia' (doh?) in Czech? Give up? It's Kila.
Yep, Kila are the hottest new Irish band in town. Hailed as 'the future of Irish Music', this seven piece band make jungle groovers out there seem like insipid amateurs. This is definitely Irish/ Celtic at its most tribal.
Every track a stomper, highlights included 'Tog E Go Bog E' ('Take It Easy' in English) which gave a whole new twist to accapella, Ronan O Snodaigh leading with impassioned vocals in Irish. 'The Compledgation' kicked off with heart-soaring uillean piping by Eoin Dillon, joined by Brian Hogan on bass which added a jazzy rhythm. My favourite number was 'Turlough MacSuibhnes', a tune dedicated to a piper in Donegal, with flutist Colm O Snodaigh on saxophone and Ronan's fevered bodhran playing, Lance Hogan provided solid percussion on djembe, toms and drums, and Rossa O Snodaigh completed the line-up for the evening on clarinet, whistles and bouzouki.
All in all, Kila are riding on the crest of a wave that's set to
take them to Japan, Canada and Spain later this year. With their current
album having gone 'Gold' after hitting the charts in Ireland, it's not
hard to see what all the fuss is about.
Watch this space.
